The Miller Place-Mount Sinai Historical Society
Our Mission
Miller Place – Mount Sinai Historical Society’s mission is to promote and encourage historical research, to share this knowledge and gain a greater understanding and appreciation for the rich history of Miller Place and Mount Sinai.
Our Story
Founded in 1974 as the Miller Place Historical Society, the organization expanded its scope in 1982 to include Mount Sinai, reflecting the deep historical ties between the two communities dating back to the 1600s. Today, the Society proudly oversees two historic properties: The William Miller House and The Daniel Hawkins House, preserving these cultural treasures for future generations.
Historical Properties
The William Miller House (1720)
Acquired by the Society in 1979 from the estate of Harry Millard—the last direct descendant of William Miller—this historic home is a centerpiece of local heritage. The house consists of three distinct sections:
- 1720: The original middle room, built nearly 300 years ago.
- 1750: A second house was joined to the west end.
- 1816: A third house was relocated and added to the east end.
Preserved with minimal interior changes over three centuries, the William Miller House is listed on the New York State Register of Historic Places. The Society maintains it as a living museum and the heart of its educational activities, offering a window into early Long Island life.
The Daniel Hawkins House (1810)
Located on North Country Road just east of the William Miller House, the Daniel Hawkins House is another jewel of local history. Built in 1810, it remained in the Hawkins family until the 1930s before being sold to the McCaddin family of Brooklyn. In 1998, Linda and Arthur Calace generously donated the house to the Society.
Currently undergoing restoration, the Daniel Hawkins House will serve as an archival library and exhibition space, allowing the William Miller House to focus on being a living museum.
