In 1810, Daniel Hawkins arrived from Setauket and established the Daniel Hawkins House, which remained in his family’s ownership until the 1930s when it was sold to the McCaddin family of Brooklyn. Decades later, in 1998, Linda and Arthur Calace generously purchased the house and donated this historic treasure to the Miller Place-Mount Sinai Historical Society.Recognizing its historical significance, the Society has launched a major fundraising campaign to restore the house. Once restored, the Daniel Hawkins House will serve as an archival library and exhibition space, enhancing the Society’s ability to preserve and showcase local history. This new purpose will also allow the William Miller House to focus fully on its role as a museum, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the past.

Come explore a house that’s seen it all — built in three parts over nearly a century, starting in 1720. The first addition came in 1750, and the final wing in 1816. Since then? Not a single structural change. What you see is exactly what generations before you saw.
This house was home to the Miller family for over 250 years, right up until 1978. Then, the Miller Place Historical Society stepped in to preserve it — and opened the doors to history in 1979. Today, it proudly stands on the New York State Register of Historic Places. But this isn’t just any old house. Its walls have stories:
- A farmer who built with his own hands
- A Civil War surgeon who returned from the front
- A Loyalist who once hid his beliefs
- A Patriot who couldn’t hide his passion for freedom
And that’s just the beginning……..
